A Radio Legend Bids Farewell: Mike O'Brian's Retirement Journey
A Las Vegas radio icon is hanging up his headphones after nearly four decades of entertaining and connecting with listeners.
Mike O'Brian, the beloved Program Director and morning host of Beasley Media Group's Classic Hits 96.3 KKLZ, is retiring at the end of October. His journey in the Las Vegas market has been an extraordinary one, spanning almost four decades and leaving an indelible mark on the city's airwaves.
O'Brian's radio career began in the 1980s when he arrived in Las Vegas, hosting mornings on 98.5 KLUC. From there, he moved on to 97.1 KXPT and 105.5 KSTJ, but it was at KKLZ that he found his true home. Since the 1990s, he has been the voice of the "Mike & Carla" morning show, alongside his co-host and partner, Carla Rea.
But here's where it gets controversial... or rather, emotional. O'Brian's retirement is a bittersweet moment for both him and his loyal listeners. In his own words, "Hosting this show has been the honor of a lifetime. I never imagined I'd spend decades waking up with Las Vegas, sharing laughter and stories with our listeners. I'm deeply grateful for the memories and the recognition."
And this is the part most people miss: O'Brian's impact goes beyond the airwaves. He has become a part of people's daily lives, a trusted companion, and a friend they look forward to hearing each morning. His passion and talent have left a lasting impact on KKLZ and the entire Las Vegas community.
Beasley Media Group's Chief Content Officer, Justin Chase, sums it up beautifully: "Mike is one of those rare broadcasters who truly becomes part of people's lives. His voice has been a constant in Las Vegas for close to 40 years, making us feel connected and bringing joy and laughter to our mornings."
As KKLZ prepares to bid farewell to O'Brian, they will be celebrating his incredible journey with on-air tributes, special guests, and listener memories throughout the month. His final show will air on Friday, October 31, marking the end of an era.
Carla Rea, his co-host and dear friend, adds, "Working with Mike has been the highlight of my career. He's more than just a co-host; he's a partner and a dear friend. I'm thrilled for him as he embarks on this new chapter, and I know our listeners feel the same!"
So, as we celebrate Mike O'Brian's retirement, let's also reflect on the impact of radio personalities like him.
